You Don't Build Residual Income for Today
Published September 2026
One of the biggest misunderstandings about residual income is that people expect it to transform their lives immediately.
When it doesn't, many assume it isn't working.
I understand that feeling because I once thought exactly the same.
Looking back now, I realise I was measuring the wrong thing.
Planting Trees
Nobody plants an oak tree expecting shade next summer.
We understand that some things simply take time.
Yet when it comes to building an additional income, we often expect immediate results.
Perhaps that's the wrong expectation.
Thinking Like Your Future Self
These days I try to make decisions with my future self in mind.
Will today's effort make life easier five years from now?
Will it create opportunities that don't exist today?
If the answer is yes, it's usually worth doing.
That's how I now think about residual income.
The Quiet Years Matter Most
The years that seem uneventful are often the years doing the heavy lifting.
Commission grows.
Skills improve.
Confidence develops.
Relationships deepen.
You may not notice the progress from one month to the next.
But over several years, the difference can be remarkable.
Looking Through the Windscreen
It's easy to look in the rear-view mirror and see why yesterday's decisions mattered.
The challenge is making today's decisions without knowing exactly where they'll lead.
That's where faith in the process becomes important.
Not blind optimism.
Just the understanding that worthwhile things often take longer than we'd like.
The Bigger Picture
If I had judged every year purely on what it produced in that moment, I might have stopped long before the benefits became obvious.
Thankfully, I didn't.
The move to Cumbria reminded me that today's life is largely the result of decisions made years ago.
That, to me, is the real purpose of building residual income.
Not to change today.
To quietly improve tomorrow.
